What Is Spring Break Studio?

Spring Break Studio is a free online spring break camp that teaches middle and high school students (grades 6-12) the fundamentals of science communication. Over five days, students learn how to tell compelling science stories and create podcast-style content. These are skills that translate directly to the real world.

The program combines pre-recorded learning modules with live interactive sessions. Students watch short instructional videos at their own pace, then join scheduled live Zoom sessions where they can ask questions, get feedback on their projects, and connect with peers. It's the best of both worlds: flexibility to learn on your schedule with the support and accountability of live instruction.

Here's what makes it truly flexible: The program is open from March 3 - April 4, 2026, and students can start whenever their spring break actually happens. Whether your school district breaks in mid-March or early April, your student can jump in and complete the five-day program during the week that works for your family. We know not all schools coordinate spring break schedules, so we built Spring Break Studio to work around that reality.

By the end of their five days, students will have recorded a short science story using their phone—nothing fancy, just their voice explaining something they're curious about. It's a first step, not a finished product. And that's exactly the point.

What Students Will Explore

In Spring Break Studio, students get an introduction to science communication concepts through four core areas:

Science Storytelling Basics: How to take a science topic they're curious about and turn it into a story someone actually wants to hear. Students learn what makes a science story engaging and practice finding the "hook" that makes people care. No writing assignments—just exploring ideas.

Recording Your Voice: Students practice using their phone's voice notes app to record themselves explaining a science concept. It's simple, no-pressure practice—just them, their phone, and their ideas. No fancy equipment, no editing software, just getting comfortable hearing their own voice.

Trying Science Communication: By the end of the five days, students will have recorded a short voice note explaining something scientific—maybe a concept they learned in class, something they're curious about, or a fun fact they want to share. It's a first attempt, not a polished product. The goal is to try it, not perfect it.

Who Should Join Spring Break Studio

This free science communication preview is designed for students in grades 6-12 who are:

  • Curious about science and want to try talking about it in a low-pressure setting

  • Wondering if science communication or content creation might be for them

  • Already on TikTok or YouTube and curious about making educational content

  • Looking for something interesting to do during spring break that doesn't require special equipment

  • Thinking about SciComm Summer Camp but want to try a preview first

Why Science Communication Matters for Kids and Teens

You might be wondering: why science communication? Why not just a general "content creation" camp?

Here's the thing: science communication for kids isn't just about teaching facts. It's about teaching students how to think critically, evaluate information, and share ideas in a world that's overflowing with misinformation.

When students learn science communication, they develop:

Critical Thinking Skills: They learn to ask "How do we know this?" and "What's the evidence?" These questions are essential in a digital age where anyone can post anything online.

Media Literacy: Understanding how content is created helps students become smarter consumers of media. They learn to spot clickbait, identify credible sources, and recognize when science is being oversimplified or sensationalized.

Communication Confidence: Public speaking and storytelling are life skills. Whether your student ends up in science, business, education, or any other field, being able to explain complex ideas clearly is invaluable.

Digital Fluency: Today's students are digital natives, but that doesn't mean they know how to create content with purpose. Science communication training teaches them to use their screen time intentionally—to build, create, and educate rather than just consume.

Science communication is also one of the fastest-growing career fields. From YouTube science channels to podcasts like Radiolab and Ologies, there's a huge demand for people who can make science accessible. Even if your student doesn't pursue a science career, the skills they learn are transferable to nearly every industry.

What Makes This Spring Break Preview Different

There are plenty of online spring break programs out there, but here's what sets Spring Break Studio apart:

It's a Preview, Not a Bootcamp: Spring Break Studio isn't trying to turn students into professional podcasters in five days. It's designed to give them a low-pressure introduction to science communication so they can decide if they want to dive deeper in SciComm Summer Camp. Think of it as a test drive.

Blended Learning Format: Unlike purely live camps that require students to be available at specific times every day, or fully self-paced courses where students get lost, Spring Break Studio combines pre-recorded modules with live support sessions. Students learn at their own pace, then get real-time interaction during scheduled live sessions.

No Equipment Required: Most content creation programs require microphones, editing software, or expensive gear. Spring Break Studio requires nothing more than a smartphone with a voice notes app.

Expert-Led Instruction: Spring Break Studio is hosted by SciComm Summer Camp, with instruction from a PhD scientist who has years of experience in science communication and media production, including hosting a Webby-nominated podcast.

Free and Accessible: Most online spring break camps charge $200-$500. Spring Break Studio is 100% free because it's designed to introduce students to what we do—and hopefully get them excited about continuing with SciComm Summer Camp.

Clear Path Forward: For students who love Spring Break Studio and want to go deeper—learning actual podcasting, audio editing, and public speaking—there's SciComm Summer Camp waiting for them. But Spring Break Studio is valuable on its own as an introduction to science communication.
